IP Telephony FAQ's:
Why are there two versions
of the G.711 CODEC?
This goes back to the development of digitized voice by the phone
companies. The U.S. and Japan have standardized on G.711 mu-law.
The European standard is G.711 a-law. They use slightly different
coding schemes.
How Does VAD Work?
VAD, or Voice Activity Detection, is a technique that reduces
bandwidth in VoIP telephone systems by listening for the silence
in normal conversations and not transmitting any packets during
these periods.
